House Smith, OranjezichtResidential

This project located in Oranjezicht, Cape Town, entails the refurbishment and additions to a Victorian residence of high historic significance. Due to the architectural style and orientation of the building, a substantial portion of the interior space had to be ‘opened up’ and the accommodation re-organized in order to accommodate a more contemporary ‘open-plan’ arrangement. Additional accommodation was provided towards the back of the property and was carefully considered in order to not be visible from the public environment of RosmeadAvenue. The building form of this new double storey structure, as well as the materials used in the construction thereof, is deliberately in stark contrast with that of the Victorian residence. Traditional Victorian interior embellishment has been replaced with built-in furniture and finishes in a neutral materials palette, which allow for calm and timeless interior spaces.
