Perched above the harbour and Simons Bay, this house has been designed to ‘grow’ out of the hillside. A solid dark plinth of garaging and plant beds forms a platform from which this contemporary holiday home extends. Although contemporary in style, it was also important to reference the architectural vernacular of historical Simons Town – typically consisting of simple shed-like forms, vertically oriented window and door apertures and timber shutters and pergolas. In response to prevailing local weather patterns, the patio, entertainment deck and pool are all well sheltered from the prevailing south easterly wind. The interiors are typified by lofty ceiling heights and are immaculately detailed. Distinct Alder timber was used extensively in the built-in cabinetry fittings.
